The Calm Before the Storm

My mornings usually have me going straight to my office. Sometimes I stop by my kitchen for coffee, but usually go straight to the office. This morning I actually went out front and saw this beautiful early morning sky. The pink clouds looked like cotton candy against a blue wrapper. I was thinking it was the calm before the storm. I was waiting for Ernesto and thinking of the things I needed to do before the storm’s arrival.

As I sit here now, it seems to blessedly be a non-event. We had a regular storm last week that was worse than what the Keys had earlier. I hope it stays that way!!

Ernesto 08/29/06 5am Update Good Morning! Current forecast is a tropical storm to the west of us. That means we’ll get lots and lots of rain (great). Wind, but  hopefully not hurricane strength. The worst part of the storm is supposed to hit overnight. I don’t like night-time hurricanes. I can’t see anything and that makes it worse. I’ll be pulling some of the shutters as soon as it gets light this morning, the rain will be starting this afternoon.

Note the arrow and sign - yup, that’s where I am. We’re not going to take a direct hit (according to the NHC), but we’re on the rainy icky side of the storm. That right side is just not good. 8″-10″ of rain forecasted. Oh yeah, and tornado threat - great.

I went out yesterday morning to get gass and pick up some groceries - I feel so smart! Last night the lines were around the block at stations. It was insanity. I’m glad we have the accordian shutters and I can actually just pull them myself, although based on what they are saying now, i could wait until this evening before having to pull anything. Hmmm, I guess I’d better take a shower and get to work.

I get up this morning, check the hurricane update and almost choke. The path went from not impacting us to directly impacting us! What the he….. The fickleness of mother nature. I had to run out this morning anyway, so I got gas, picked up some groceries and stopped at Starbucks.

Tonight Jeff and I went out to dinner, there are gas lines everyplace, except for the stations that no longer have gas. Glad I filled up this morning and Jeff filled up the gas cans! I think we’re set. I hope that they change the forecast track again.  I took pictures at lunch of what the yard looks like.

I’ll finish cleaning the house tomorrow for Adam and Holly’s visit, then I’ll take more house pictures. I need to show off my pictures!

Silly Girls

The Girls No Comments

Jeff calls me to the bedroom. I get there to see our two silly girls just hogging the bed. Bed Hogs It is so strange to see them on the bed together. Usually Sheba is the alpha cat and will chase Champagne off of the bed. This is a well practiced hierarchy that has been going on for years. Eventually Champagne moved to the chest while Sheba stayed on the bed.

Silly Girls Other than that, it was a busy day here in South Florida. Adam and Holly are coming to visit. I used that as an excuse to put our pictures back up and get some new patio furniture with matching cushions and a new umbrella for the table around the pool. I’ll put them out tomrrow and take a picture of my pretty poolside.

This week will go quickly. I have my days just jam packed with conference calls. I wonder when I’m supposed to get any work done!!

Cone of Uncertainty

Welcome to the cone of uncertainty.144732W_sm  Note where the arrow is - that is approximately where I am. The forecasters say don’t get fixated on the skinny black line. At this point I’d like to. I don’t want to be in the cone. I don’t want to think about it.  At least we have the MANLY generator. It’s big enough to start the AC. It will almost be like normal, as long as we have a roof.

Just another day in paradise.

‘Tis the Season

To be watching the Weather Channel! (No I’m not rushing Christmas). Our first hurricane of the season - Ernesto. The forecast shows that it might be coming to Florida. at200605_5day Right now the track, while not good for many people, is good for me. Just don’t want it coming here. We have the manly generator, but I don’t want to have to use it.  We have company coming next weekend, I have a system going live. It’s just not a good time for any storm to come visit. Not that there is any good time for a storm to come.

Yesterday I put more of my Hurricane Wilma pictures on Flickr.DSC_0828 Had to keep the memories alive (yeah right).

What to do on a rainy Saturday

pineapple

I truly have more to do than I have time, but I’m taking a little break. I went to check out my pineapple this morning. The one that was almost ripe was chewed into, but the other three were still there. One came off in my hand. I hope its ripe; I brought it up to the porch.

We ran our errands today. One big errand was to get a new chair at office depot (to go along with my new desk). Seriously, my current chair is a little too low so I’m not sitting ergonomically. I’m probably not with this new chair, but it will be better than my current one. Schools started this week, so the store was pretty crowded with the kids getting their school supplies. Office Depot had a display with all of the local school’s list of required supplies for the school year. What happened to the schools providing tablets and pencils? And when did kids start having to supply tissues, a BOX of ziplog bags and hand sanitizer?  Its no wonder parents today need a tax free holiday to get school supplies!  Things certainly have changed.

Time to go rearrange my office and do some work. What a way to spend a Saturday night!

I haven’t had a week this hard in a long time……

It’s Friday night. I’ve made it through the week and honestly I wasn’t sure I was going to make it. Let’s see….Sunday night I find ants on my side of the bed. Not little sugar ants, big carpenter ants. Not just a couple, a couple dozen. It was icky, it was disconcerting. We killed off all that we could see and finally went to bed, but I didn’t rest well.

My schedule on Monday was back to back calls. I had to take the girls to the vet. The vet tells me she couldn’t hear Sheba’s heartbeat very well. So now I’m worried. I go back to work and have to put up with more calls. We’re both exhausted and we find even more ants. Great, just great. This time they are on Jeff’s side of the room and they are on the window in the sitting room. Jeff had sprayed after work, he sprayed them again, we were smooshing them with paper towels, but there were more and more. FINALLY we got them to the point that we weren’t seen many of them, so we tried to sleep.

Tuesday was another back to back day with calls. In the morning I called the pest dude, getting him to come figure out why we have ants. The highlight of Tuesday was the arrival of my new desk!!! (which was ordered in June).new desk With working at home, my computer desk was too small to fit my desktop computer, my laptop computer and Sheba, so I needed to get her a bigger desk. new desk2 Yes, I bought my cat a desk. As you can see, she’s made her self quite at home. sheba on her desk2

Yes, pest guy came. He looked, he looked and he looked, but he didn’t find anything. He did spray everything he could see. Tuesday night we cautiously look around the room as we’re getting ready for bed. Three and only three ants were seen and smooshed. We slept a little better.

Wendesday brings yet another insane day at work. The news from the vet was Sheba not only has a suspect heart, but she has kidney disease. Yeah, that’s what I wanted to hear. It certainly didn’t sound good and what I researched on the internet didn’t look good. Wednesday night was not a good night, but no ants. Wednesday ran into to Thursday, with work being completely insane again. My mind wasn’t completely on it. I was sad, I was confused, concerned. I didn’t know what to think. Jeff and I were both mopey and I think the girls picked up on that. I know we didn’t sleep well, but no ants!

Today, that brings us to today. I think I had 30 minutes that weren’t scheduled, but they were used. I took Sheba back to the vet for chest xrays and an EKG. The vet said she couldn’t see Sheba’s heart on the xrays. She didn’t know if we were dealing with heart disease or not. The other vet will look at the films tomorrow and give me a call. She seemed more positive than the original vet. She also told me the kidney disease was just in the early stage (which I had researched last night), so there wasn’t anything imminent to worry about. I left feeling much better than I had felt all week. Of course I haven’t gotten the results from the EKG and don’t know what’s obsuring the picture of Sheba’s heart, but it seems as long as she’s happy, alert, eating, playing and purring I don’t have a lot to worry about immediately. After all, she is a 16 year old kitty.

I figured she would be so mad at me after taking her back to the vet, but shortly after we got home she was back in the office jumping on the desk. She was even playing with my pen, batting at it and chasing it. I haven’t seen her play like that in quite a while.

I’m going to have to work this weekend, there is so much I have to do to get one client live and start another one. I couldn’t do anything more tonight. Sometimes you just have to stop.

I am so ready for bed. I think i’m going to relax and read a couple of magazines. I will be sleeping in tomorrow and it will be wonderful.

I’m so happy the week is almost over

It’s been quite the stressful week. No wonder I can’t sleep. Sunday night and Monday night we had the icky ant problem. Tuesday my new desk came, which was quite exciting, but my office is still trashed. I’ll get to that this weekend. Wednesday I got the test results on my poor Sheba kitty. Taking that news was hard, worrying about what we haven’t discovered is even harder. Ignorance is bliss. On the flip side to Wednesday, I did get some good news at work. And here we are at Thursday. I got some recognition on a conf call today - YAY, but it’s been a long hard day. LONG LONG DAY.

Tomorrow the good news is that it’s Friday, the bad news is that I am on calls ALL day and I have to take Sheba back for the tests that really scare me. The test are easy (xray and ekg), the results will be scary. We’ll do what we need to for her as long as she has a good quality of life. I keep trying to talk myself out of pouting. She (and champagne) can sense that. We can’t mourn her while she’s still with us, that’s just not fair to her.

She was in a playful mood tonight. Champagne was in a jealous mood. They do have their personalities.

ok, must concentrate on sleep now.

Poor Old Kitty

The Girls No Comments

My cats are my kids, or at least they are a big part of my family. Who am I kidding, they are my kids. I took the girls to the vet on Monday. Champagne is fine, but Sheba has problems. The poor girl is almost 16, she’s an old kitty. The vet says her kidneys are having problems as is her heart. I am sad. I don’t think anything will happen tomorrow, but this is confirmation that she’s an old kitty.

She still seems happy, she eats well, she plays, she purrs and she loves her new desk. We have quality time while I’m listening to conference calls. Now that I have a big desk, I won’t have to move her when i’m trying to get work done.  I didn’t think I would be quite this sad to think of Sheba not being around. I certainly don’t want to mourn her while she’s still nudging me to pet her, but it’s hard not to think about today.

Only other pet lovers will really understand. Everyone else will think I’m just a big wuss (and I am, but in this case I’m not as big as usual). My boss is a pet lover, she was good to talk to today.

I’m taking her back for a few more tests on Friday.  I hope I don’t find out her condition is worse than I think. The vet says she’s not in any pain, she doesn’t seem like she’s not feeling well, so I’m just going to keep on enjoying her while she’s here.
