Another thing to file under getting old…

Life No Comments

While we were at Disney, Jeff and I were making fun of the ways some of the teens were talking and acting (it was fun). That aside, all over Pleasure Island are signs about needing to be 21 to get into any clubs and I was joking with Jeff about how nice it would be to get carded, but of course, I’m probably old enough to be the mother of the people checking the ID’s. The worst part is that it could be true - I am old enough to be the mother of many of the people I’m interacting with. I think that can’t be true since I still feel 21 myself. I just had to laugh when I said those words.

Saturday night after the show we watched as a couple was seated across from us. Jeff made a comment about them being so young. They were, but so cute. I don’t know where time has gone.

Disney Weekend

vacation No Comments

It was a good weekend to go to Disney. It wasn’t too hot (it wasn’t hot at all). The parks were pretty uncrowded and there were some good deals for Florida Residents.  We stayed at the Port Orleans French Quarter Resort. The room was pretty standard, but the concept of the resort was nice. I like staying at a Disney property for the transportation and for the package delivery. Its nice to be able to not have to carry stuff through the parks.

Friday night we went to the Comedy Warehouse in Pleasure Island. Those improv comedians were terrific. I wish I was that clever. We laughed so hard. Nothing is taboo to them. They started the show by calling one of the people in the audience, asking a bunch of questions about them and then making up a song. This guy was out here from California with his friend, leaving his wife and kid at home. One of the troupe worked a lyric together that said I’m thinking Brokeback Mountain. Oh we laughed. Of course, that’s probably what everyone was thinking when he said he likes to travel with his friend Bo and leave his wife at home.

We spent Saturday in EPCOT, walking right into most of the rides. We did Mission to Mars twice!  Journey into imagination was finally updated. I like the new stuff they have in there.  Soarin’ is a new IMAX type ride that simulates hand-gliding. They even simulated smells (pine forest) when you went through certain scenes. They switched scenes too quickly, but it was pretty inventive. The wait was up to 75 minutes when we finally left the park. We used FastPass to get in when we did it. I don’t know why anyone would wait in line 75 minutes. Grab the FastPass and go do something else.

Saturday night we went to La Nouba (Thank you Holly & Adam). It was not something I would have made the choice to buy tickets to and that would have been my loss. What an incredible show. After the show we went to dinner and I asked Jeff how he would explain it to someone who’s never seen a show like that and he said you can’t.  He’s right, it defies explanation. The best way to describe Cirque de Soleil is a circus like show taken beyond the next level. They had clowns, acrobats and music and it was all over the top! The music was beautiful and haunting. At one point during the show I felt myself getting choked up because it was all so overwhelming. One of the highlights of the show were the people who did the acrobatics on the silks. They made it look so easy.

The only disappointing thing was the lack of the trapeze act. They brought down the nets and the trapeze, but something must have not been right. The troupe climbed back up the ladders and they took the whole thing back up. The neat thing was they had so much going on at one time, there wasn’t any ‘dead air’ during the show. At times there was too much going on, you couldn’t possible watch it all or take it all in.

Before the show they had a couple of clowns playing with the audience while people were getting seated. It made the wait time go quickly. I’m still in awe and still thinking about everything I saw. I want to go to Vegas and see another show. It was that good. What a great Christmas present.

I’m trying to figure out when we can go back for another weekend.

We went to the Fair

Fair from the Sky

Yay - we went to the South Florida Fair today. We had a good time, at least I had a good time.

There was so much food there. I was shocked! The fair isn’t all that big, but a good half of it was food. I had funnel cake. I was happy! The lunch of champions. The big thing I wanted to see was the Great American Craft Show. It was pretty good. I was able to start my Christmas shopping and found a couple of things.

There were lots of rides, but my my my they were expensive. Ride tickets were $1 a piece. Good rides were 4-5 tickets a piece. Yeah, that could get expensive! Weekend nights from 10pm to 2am they have a $25 wristband that lets you ride as much as you want in those 4 hours.

We took the sky tram across the fair to get to the animal side. That’s the real fair!! We watched some miniture horse judging. They were so cute! Pretty pretty animals. We went into the bunny tent and saw rabbits that were larger than Champagne. I never saw rabbits that large. WOW. The Poultry tent had some pretty unique looking ducks. Roosters were crowing, chickens were laying eggs in their cages. It was maddness!

They also had a MOOTERNITY tent. Yes, prego cows. Hugely prego cows that would be giving birth right there! We just missed one cow. When we got there she was licking her calf off. We get up close and personal here in south florida!

On our way out we watched some Indian dancing. It was a pretty good fair, considering one would never expect to have something like a county fair in the middle of a fairly urban area. The fairground is behind a number of strip malls. And across the street from the Starbucks. Just doesn’t make sense in the traditional way I would think of fairs.

Ah well. Next weekend is Disney!

It’s Season 6 of American Idol!

Reality TV, The Girls No Comments

January brings the new season of American Idol. Lready I”m wondering where they find these people and why they even let them go on as lohe first 3 so far were horrible, absolutely horrible. I can’t wait to see one who can actually sing.

We and the girls are still trying to figure out our way around each other. While they may just be cats, its almost like a new relationship. Its been a while since we had new pets in the house. The kitten is a kitten, so she’s easy to figure out. Phoebe is a little more set in her ways, so it’s a little strange yet. She’s sitting on jeff right now, but she’s not purring. SIGH.

Margarita wants me to put my laptop away.

WOW

The Girls No Comments

I either need to work out on a regular basis, or I need to stop working out altogether. YIKES I’m sore today, and probably not as sore as I’ll be in a few more hours. I do plan on working out later. I hope I can move.

Seemed to be a quite night with the girls. Phoebe isn’t hiding, but she doesn’t come out much, though she was a little more social this morning. I hope our attention will bring her out of her shell more. She has quite an adjustment, going from a shelter of 150+ cats for a year to a quite home with 2 other friends, one of which is just as happy to ignore her.

Champagne seems to be adjusting well. She’s on my desk visiting now, purring. She is off on her eating a little bit, but I suspect some of that is the food. She should still be eating senior food and just doesn’t like it. Ah well, there is dry food out, so she has something to munch on.

It has been nice to have something positive to concentrate on this last week. I think getting new cats quickly was a good idea for us.

Oh yeah, its monday, guess that means I should do something productive for work.

That will teach me.

We had to give Phoebe a pill today. I was used to giving Sheba her pill. I didn’t realize how much energy and strength she had lost. Compared to today’s experience, that was nothing. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, so I had Jeff hold her while I got ready to fling the pill. I have a nice slice on my knee to remember the experience by. That will teach me!

Earlier today I went to the gym. I ran into my trainer. She offered to do a free session. Greeeaaattt. Current mobility is limited, I expect it to be worse tomorrow. I thought going to the gym was a good idea - that will teach me!

Luckily church and grocery shopping were pretty uneventful. Oreo’s were on sale!! So, now, a glass of wine or a plate of cookies. Hmmmm.

Just another day at the Cathouse

The Girls No Comments

Well! I’m certainly glad it was Saturday.  We had planned a quiet day at home today to help the girls all get used to each other and hopefully become social kitties. Our day started by going to the vet. Phoebe wasn’t feeling well, of course she felt worse being shoved into a carrier and taken to a vet to be poked and prodded. We got her some meds, so hopefully she’ll start feeling better and come out of the train room, which has turned into the cat room.

One good thing about going to the vet, Sheba’s ashes were back. They are in a beautifully carved teak box. It was big enough that we could put her rat in there as well.

So, I needed to do some laundry. I think I’ve done about 6 loads today. The last being the mattress pad. The same one that I need to make the bed so I can go to sleep. I hope I can throw it in the dryer soon.

Phoebe won’t come out of the cat room. I’m hoping that once she feels better and we can stop torturing her with putting meds in her and ointment in her ears that she’ll come out into the house more. Champagne comes out sporatically, but mostly she stays in the bedroom. Margarita doesn’t care, she’s chasing toys all over the house. She needs to be around people and if she’s not playing she’s on one of us sleeping.

Tomorrow is going to be a full day as well, I have to sweep the cat room and figure out where to put the food and the litter box. I’ve got a kitten, adult and senior cat to feed. I need to figure out how to feed 3 types of cats and make sure they all get fed correctly. Oh and then there is church, grocery shopping, the gym, and putting clothes away. Maybe I should start tonight!

Day Three in the Cat House

The Girls No Comments

Another big day for everyone involved. The newbies had more time out to explore the house. The big event took place this afternoon, both doors were left open! The met again.

The first one to brave Champagne was Margarita. It would be a battle of the drinks. Champagne placed herself in the doorway to the bedroom. Margarita walked up to her with only the bravado that a kitten can get away with. Champagne hissed, Margarita hissed, Champagned hissed again. Margarita backed off and went away. A while later she came back, but not by the direct route. Champagne hissed at her again, but let her pass into the bedroom. Champagne jumped back on the bed, the queen of her domain.

After dinner we let them out again. We had quality time with them in the family room, or at least with Phoebe, as Margarita was too busy being a kitten. Amazingly Champagne came out of her room and plopped herself down in the middle of the family room. Once again, queen of all she surveyed. Soon it was her chance to meet Pheobe again, nose to nose. Champagne hissed, Phoebe hissed and gave her a wide berth and that was that. Champagne went back to the bedroom, satisfied that she made her point.

We put the newbies back into their bedroom tonight. Starting tomorrow they will have to learn to live with each other.

I guess I can sleep here

Day Two. It was a big day for the girls. I let them out during the day for an hour. When Jeff got home we let them out again for a couple of hours. Its going to be a few more days until we give them run of the house and let Champagne meet with them. I’m looking forward to getting them socialized and used to everything, but that will take time. Based on Margarita, she’s already socialized. She was snoozing on Jeff.

Pheobe, being older, is having a bit of trouble yet. She seems a little more reserved. She loves attention, but she doesn’t want to come out as much. And she talks! A LOT. I did have them both on my desk for a while. That is always a nice thing.

I see a trip to PetsMart in my future. Need to get a scratching post or a kitty condo with scratching areas. And a few more toys to wind up the kitten. I’m going to get some good action shots of her.

Time to go love on Champagne for a while.

Welcome to the Family

Some people may say its too early, but it felt right to us. We’ve added two more loving girls to our home, adopting them from Adopt A Cat, a no kill shelter in Lake Park, Fl.

Phoebe is a three year old. She was at the shelter over a year, so I’m happy to give her a home and some focused attention. She is a lover, just soaks up attention and purrrrrrrs.

Margarita

Margarita Margarita is a kitten, and as energtic and playful as they come. I was thinking I adopted a dog this evening as she brought her toy back to me to throw again.

Champage is adjusting. She figured out Sheba wasn’t here anymore. I think it bothered her. She wasn’t searching for her, but she wasn’t acting normal (I know, how can I tell). Obviously she wasn’t thrilled that we brought home new cats tonight, but it didn’t take her long to go back to her purrbaby self. We’ll acclimate them over the next week.

I’m still missing Sheba terribly, but we’re back to a full house and I think that will help us heal.
