The Craft Gene
February 10, 2008 crafting, my life No CommentsI found yet another hobby this weekend. I don’t have enough time to get everything I want finished, but yet, I am adding more! I should never be bored.
I was laying bed last night thinking of my latest discovered talent and was able to trace it back to Mom. She gave me the geek gene and the craft gene. I remember when I was a child she would do different crafts. She quilted, she sewed, she did some paper crafts, she crocheted. Sissy is also crafty and geeky. Looks like I got it as well. What’s frustrating about this is that I was convinced that I didn’t have any artistic talent. I wasn’t able to make the connection between arts and crafts (even though they are used in the phrase ‘arts and crafts’). When I was in high school, art class consisted of drawing, painting, and other ‘traditional’ arts. I don’t have the skill to draw or paint, but that doesn’t mean I’m not artistic. I wish I had known then that photography was considered art, that other crafts were considered art.
I find that I’m very creative. I can use those skills along with my more analytical skills in both my work and my home. I can’t turn back 20+ years of feeling un-artistic, but I can embrace my newly discovered talents - and I certainly am. I successfully taught myself to crochet! My first project is going to be a blanket for the girls. Really, it’s a sampler of the different stitches, but since I’m doing it anyway to learn, I may as well make something. My next project is going to be a throw for the bed and then I’m going to move into the crocheted lace. I’ve got a lot of lost time to make up for!!
